Joining us on the night will be:
Ben Smith: Find Your Happy
On the 1st September 2015 Ben began one of the most challenging and rewarding experience of his life, he ran 401 marathons in 401 days all around the UK.
At 29, Ben suffered from a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack), otherwise known as an incomplete stroke. This led Ben to sit up and make a change, start looking after himself and at what makes him happy. This came in the form of running.
Rob graduated from the University of Bristol in 2017. As a student he actively carried out charity work; raising over £20,00 during his time at university. Upon graduating he got a job in a law firm and will begin his legal training next year.
All this comes five years after a catastrophic road accident that left him paralysed from the neck down and dependent on a ventilator to breathe.
Abdul Raoof Malik: I Am Bristol
Abdul overcame a childhood of hardship and poverty, transforming his life when he opened the first all Halal butchers, Pak Butchers.
Today he is an award winning Entrepreneur, Businessman, Faith leader, Governor and Politician, aspire to be inspired!
Mena Fombo: No You Can’t Touch My Hair: How To Be A Great Ally
Mena Fombo is the driving force behind the international campaign in 2017 “No. You Cannot Touch My Hair” which attracted contributions from people across the UK and around the world.
One year on from the international survey and her TEDxBristol talk on the topic, Mena will update on the impact of the campaign, and share details of how students can become supporters and ‘Great Allies’ to the Black Girl Movement.
Dr Clive Colledge: We Were Born to Connect
Clive is a great believer in higher education, lifelong learning and TEDx talks! He’s 71, was awarded a PhD at age 64, ran an international masters course until he was 69 and delivered a TEDxBristol talk at age 70. To him age is a number.
Clive’s ‘Inspire Talk’ will inspire everyone in the audience to take up the challenge of connecting across generations in order to solve society’s problems together.
Antonia Forster: Yes It’s Natural: a Queer Scientist’s Journey
After hearing people use the phrase “it’s not natural” to justify bigotry, Antonia wrote a talk to dismantle this idea, and show the diversity and queerness evident in nature.
For Bristol Student Union’s Inspire Talks, Antonia will be sharing the story of her journey – the highs and lows of her experience from scientist, to public speaker, to queer spokesperson.
Mel Rodrigues: Introduction to TEDxBristol: Everyone Has a Story!
Mel is a journalist and producer at the BBC and Creative Director of TEDxBristol. Her passion for this city began in the late 90’s when she moved here to study at Bristol University.
For Bristol Student Union’s Inspire Talks, she’ll be introducing the speakers from TEDxBristol: Dare to Disrupt, and sharing her journey into storytelling which started as a fresher at Bristol University this time 20 years ago.
Come and be a part of the conversation.
